The PIXERA-Powered Garden Experience at Hamad International Airport

For the terminal expansion at Hamad International Airport, Moment Factory and Electrosonic, in collaboration with Smart Monkeys and AV Stumpfl, created a comprehensive digital art installation for The Orchard, a tropical garden at the heart of the biophilic concourse. 

This installation features a digital ribbon stretching a full kilometer across two stories, aimed at amplifying the sophisticated design of the concourse and unifying it with the site’s spectacular natural features. Moment Factory received a Digital Signage Award in 2024 for the project. 

The 1.2-kilometer ribbon, with its unique curved segments and non-linear corners, is a captivating focal point. It showcases intricate details, botanical elements, and surreal graphics that draw inspiration from Qatari architecture and craftsmanship. This unique feature, designed by Moment Factory, embodies Qatar’s cultural heritage and landmarks, creating a moment of magical transformation every hour as every screen in the concourse synchronizes with the content on the LED ribbon.

The massive LED display showcases dynamic custom-designed content, with “over 169 million pixels of animation power,” according to Electrosonic. It is powered by racks of AV Stumpfl’sPIXERA media servers, which manage pixel feeds and routing while delivering the content, allowing for high-fidelity video graphics that reinforce the airport’s commitment to elegance and luxury. Smart Monkeys’ ISAAC platform, providing an additional hardware layer for control, monitoring, and scheduling, is a key component in this process.

“Electrosonic has a long history in collaborating with project stakeholders to design the right technology around tight deadlines,” states Alex Westerh with Electrosonic, recalling both the impending 2022 FIFA World Cup and constant airport security measures that affected much of the project. “It’s crucial that our partners share the same sense of trust and urgency. AV Stumpfl’sPIXERA team absolutely embodies that role by supporting the project and specifying products that enhance the passenger journey in spaces like The Orchard.”

With the help of PIXERA, this multimedia ecosystem transforms the expanded concourse into an airport oasis, providing a space for travelers seeking rest, respite, and rejuvenation. The digital art installation not only enhances the ambiance and sophistication of The Orchard’s natural surroundings but also plays a pivotal role in promoting Doha and Qatar as sought-after destinations.
