Epic Scale, Real-Time Precision: PIXERA supports LA Phil’s Die Walküre at Walt Disney Concert Hall

How Night Light used PIXERA’s multi-user workflow and real-time 3D mapping to transform sculpted paper scenery into a dynamic operatic world.

When the Los Angeles Philharmonic and renowned conductor Gustavo Dudamel brought Richard Wagner’s monumental opera Die Walküre to the iconic Walt Disney Concert Hall, the visual ambitions demanded a media processing and projection mapping solution capable of matching the production's artistic scale. To transform the concert venue into a dynamic operatic landscape, long-standing LA Phil production partner Night Light relied on PIXERA software to power a complex multi-projector setup across sculptural, three-dimensional stage elements.

The visual design required projection across three distinct surfaces: a central backdrop flanked by two outboard screens. Rather than traditional flat, two-dimensional projection surfaces, the production featured custom three-dimensional shapes crafted from sculpted paper.

Throughout the production process, these modular structures evolved repeatedly, requiring continuous adjustments to projection mapping and content alignment. To accommodate these changing scenic elements, the team relied on PIXERA version 25.1R. Its real-time mapping capabilities allowed programming adjustments to be implemented quickly, ensuring that visual content remained precisely aligned despite ongoing modifications to the projection surfaces.

At the heart of the video infrastructure was a PIXERA-based multi-user environment designed and deployed by Night Light, a long-standing technical partner of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Leveraging PIXERA’s native Director-Client workflow, the main and backup servers operated in a fully synchronized configuration, maintaining a complete 1:1 real-time replica of the show environment across both systems. This approach provided operational reliability while enabling efficient collaboration during programming and rehearsals.

The PIXERA workflow integrated seamlessly with a Barco E2 screen management system and four Christie Boxer 4K30 projectors, delivering high-resolution visuals across the venue’s complex projection surfaces. A dedicated network infrastructure, unified via Netgear AVLine M4250 switches, provided synchronization across all connected systems and helped ensure stable operation and frame-accurate playback throughout the production.

The project's workflow was built around close collaboration between Evolve and Night Light. Kevin Ring, National Director of Technology at Evolve, developed the master show file and initial mapping framework, establishing the foundation for the production. On site, Night Light’s video engineer and technician Micah James took over programming, projection calibration, and ongoing mapping adjustments as the production evolved. Thanks to PIXERA's intuitive workflow, the transition between teams was seamless, allowing the creative and technical departments to work efficiently throughout rehearsals.

For a production of this magnitude, precision and flexibility were equally important. The combination of three-dimensional projection mapping, layered projector outputs, and constantly evolving scenic elements demanded a platform capable of both broad creative control and detailed fine-tuning. PIXERA's real-time rendering environment enabled rapid mapping refinements, cue updates, and content adjustments while maintaining synchronization across the complete system. As a result, creative changes requested during rehearsals could often be implemented within minutes, helping the production team maximize valuable rehearsal time.

“I find PIXERA's programming and mapping to be the most accurate I've ever used,” says Micah James. “Broad strokes and granular changes are all achievable because the mathematical and geometric calculations are rendered in real time. The interface is exceptionally clean, and networking units together to achieve perfect sync is virtually effortless, which is a top priority on shows of this magnitude.”

Although no support assistance was required during this production, Micah emphasized the value of the team behind PIXERA: “I find PIXERA's support to be the best I've ever experienced. Even the smallest questions are answered incredibly quickly, and the team consistently follows up to ensure everything has been fully resolved and that the system is performing as expected.”

In addition to its creative flexibility, PIXERA helped streamline on-site operations. The speed and efficiency of the workflow allowed programming, mapping adjustments, and calibration tasks to be handled by a lean technical team, reducing operational complexity while keeping production schedules concise.
