New Terminal A at Newark Liberty International Airport Unveils 'Digital Journey of Surprises'
PIXERA helped bring Terminal A into a new digital era of surprises
Newark Liberty International Airport's Terminal A has recently undergone a transformation that has set a new standard for travel experiences. At the heart of the design: PIXERA two media servers made by AV Stumpfl. Canadian content house Moment Factory was contracted to provide a turnkey solution for the massive project, who in turn pulled in integration firm Electrosonic to bring this vision to life. Moment Factory led the creative work, from video content production to design intent, while Electrosonic was responsible for the detailed engineering, system integration, and ongoing support and maintenance of the installations.
The resulting state-of-the-art multimedia installation, which spans over one million square feet, enhances the passenger journey through what they call the 'Digital Journey of Surprises.' PIXERA units serve flawless content reliably in two stops along this digital journey: the Departure Hall and the Forest of Firsts in the Retail Hall.
As travelers enter the Departure Hall in the newly built Terminal A, they are greeted by a Nanolumens Engage Series 2.5mm LED welcome banner, a panoramic 230 feet wide. This continuous digital canvas (over 28,000 pixels long), seamlessly integrated into the architecture above the check-in lines, displays dynamic New Jersey-themed vignettes that change from one surprising scene to the next.
Continuing through the terminal, passengers experience the Forest of Firsts: a collection of eight towering LED pylons ranging from 14 to 28 feet high. These multimedia pillars celebrate New Jersey’s innovations in science and literature with engaging visuals and interactive content. The journey doesn’t end here; the retail hall offers an immersive experience that blends historical homage with modern-day technological achievements.
In both environments, PIXERA two media servers provide high-fidelity reliability for a space that rarely sleeps. Moment Factory and Electrosonic worked with Smart Monkeys in both content development, as well as control and system monitoring. Smart Monkeys’ ISAAC platform (and the integration with PIXERA) proved invaluable. Matthieu Gourd, a Moment Factory Technical Producer for both North America and Europe, characterized the choice “We’ve used the ISAAC/PIXERA platform integration for other airport projects, and knew it was reliable.”
The project, dubbed the largest design-build project in New Jersey history, was backed by extensive studies on spatial design and passenger behavior to ensure that the installations not only entertain but also facilitate efficient passenger flow and enhance the overall airport environment.
Together, Electrosonic and Moment Factory have created a smart multimedia ecosystem that engages, informs, and instills a sense of New Jersey pride in both locals and visitors. This cutting-edge technology not only boosts regional business and tourism but also enriches the travel experience, making Terminal A a gateway that truly represents New Jersey’s spirit of innovation and hospitality.
