For Helloween's 40 Years Anniversary World Tour, visual storytelling plays a central role in the audience experience. As one of heavy metal's most iconic bands, Helloween has cultivated a distinctive visual identity over decades, making content a key element of the live production. Longtime creative partner and show designer Martin Häuslerapproached the anniversary tour with a content-first mindset, creating unique visual worlds around each song before integrating lighting, live cameras and show control elements. To manage this complex environment across a global touring schedule, the team selected PIXERA software as the central platform for content playback, show control, live video processing and audio distribution.

The tour spans a wide variety of production environments, from arena shows to festivals and international fly dates across Asia, North America and South America. Depending on the venue configuration, PIXERA drives between 8K and 9K of total canvas resolution across multiple LED surfaces positioned both on and off stage. For European dates supported by touring infrastructure, the production runs with two PIXERA Manager systems at FOH and two playback systems running PIXERA Quad Server licenses on stage in a fully redundant configuration. For overseas shows, PIXERA Manager and playback functionality are combined into the same front of house systems, maintaining redundancy while reducing the amount of equipment required for international transport. Depending on the production format, the show operates with either two or three 4K outputs, allowing the visual experience to scale efficiently while remaining consistent across different venues.

A key requirement for production was the seamless integration of multiple departments and technologies. PIXERA serves as the central hub for show control via Stream Deck and Companion, LED screen control via MIDI controllers, NDI pixel mapping to grandMA lighting consoles, Dante audio distribution, and the processing of live camera feeds before final LED playback. Bringing these functions together within a single workflow enables tight synchronization between the video, lighting and audio departments while simplifying operation throughout the tour.

The visual content was a defining element of the production from the very beginning. Rather than being added to an existing show concept, content formed the foundation around which lighting, live cameras and show control were developed. This approach reflects Helloween's long-standing visual identity and the expectations of a fan base that has come to associate the band's live performances with elaborate visual storytelling.

The content-driven nature of the show also required a high degree of flexibility. Different show versions were prepared for arenas, festivals and configurations with or without IMAG screens, enabling the team to quickly adapt to changing production requirements while maintaining a consistent visual language. PIXERA's workflow allows content variations to be activated and deactivated efficiently, helping the production scale without introducing unnecessary complexity.

While delivering reliable playback on the arena touring setup was relatively straightforward, maintaining the same level of performance on compact fly-rig systems introduced additional challenges. The team required stable playback, full redundancy, support for NDI and Dante workflows, multiple network environments, API-based control systems and the ability to transition quickly between different production formats. PIXERA provided the reliability and flexibility needed to support these requirements throughout the tour.

For Martin Häusler, choosing PIXERA was a logical next step after more than 15 years of working alongside media server programmers and operators. The platform offered both intuitive access and comprehensive control, enabling him to transition into programming his own productions without a steep learning curve. Beyond its usability, PIXERA's reliability was a decisive factor. Realized in collaboration with Epicto GmbH, which supplied the playback systems and technical infrastructure running PIXERA software, the project demonstrates how a content-focused production can be scaled across a demanding worldwide tour. By bringing together playback, show control, live video processing, audio distribution and lighting integration within a single platform, PIXERA helps deliver a consistent visual experience as Helloween celebrates four decades of music with audiences around the globe.
