For the past 100 years, Iowa’s Department of Theatre Arts has been a leading advocate for integrating cutting-edge technology into the curriculum. Among other platforms, Winn teaches PIXERA to students. “PIXERA impresses with its user-friendly interface. The workflow is streamlined and fast to navigate” states Bryon, also highlighting PIXERA's seamless integration into their existing ecosystem of media design tools. By using both PIXERA’s free Creator license and Pixera EDU software licenses, PIXERA offers a very approachable product for higher-ed non-profits. To date, the school has several PIXERA machines running. Six two-output licenses are used in three venues, with a dedicated license in one student venue that delivers content to 14K and 8K projectors. Additionally, Iowa’s combination Virtual Reality/Motion Capture studio offers a Pixera option for virtual production.
PIXERA's intuitive design and robust features have empowered students to explore and experiment with immersive storytelling. Winn emphasizes the importance of providing students with access to versatile tools like PIXERA, enabling them to unleash their creativity and drive innovation. "The speed at which the students can become comfortable with the technology is remarkable," Bryon remarks, underscoring PIXERA's role in accelerating the learning curve for students pursuing careers in media design and entertainment production.
At The University of Iowa, interdisciplinary collaboration lies at the heart of the educational experience. Bryon points out PIXERA's role in fostering collaboration across departments, noting how students from diverse disciplines converge to create immersive experiences. "We have dancers, engineers, and students from other departments collaborating on projects," Bryon explains, showcasing how PIXERA serves as a catalyst for cross-disciplinary collaboration and innovation.
PIXERA's versatility extends beyond the classroom, driving production excellence in main-stage shows and opera productions. Bryon recounts how PIXERA played a pivotal role in productions like ”Smile Medicine”, "Ugly Lies the Bone", and "Fierce," enhancing visual storytelling and elevating audience experiences. "PIXERA allows us to drive multiple destinations, network machines together, and deliver immersive experiences," Bryon remarks, highlighting PIXERA's impact on live performances and theatrical productions.
As The University of Iowa continues to push the boundaries of immersive education, Bryon envisions a future where PIXERA remains at the forefront of its educational initiatives. With plans to expand their use of PIXERA in upcoming productions and classroom settings, Bryon reaffirms Iowa’s commitment to providing students with the tools and skills needed to succeed in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.
The University of Iowa's partnership with PIXERA represents a paradigm shift in educational technology, empowering students and educators to redefine immersive storytelling. With Winn and Fine leading the charge, PIXERA has become synonymous with innovation and creativity at The University of Iowa, paving the way for future advancements in media design and entertainment production.
